The oldest Americans are also the happiest, research finds

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 13:33:54 PDT
It turns out the golden years really are golden. Eye-opening new research finds the happiest Americans are the oldest, and older adults are more socially active than the stereotype of the lonely senior suggests. The two go hand-in-hand: Being social can help keep away the blues. "The good news is that with age comes happiness," said study....

One hundred Inuit teens. Ten hip-hop dancers. Five days. Sheesh, we just have to start getting more sleep. But wait, this isn't a really weird dream after another cherished soiree of beer and extra saucy wings.

The End of an Era, The Stinehour Press is Closing!

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 06:41:21 PDT
I find this post very disturbing to write and a sad reflection on our current economic situation here in the US, as well as an unfortunate look at the trend in book publishing to find the cheapest and “good enough” printing press for the production of Fine Art Books. Where are most “fine art” books printed now?…China! That is not to say that

Heart rate and exercise

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 12:03:17 PDT
This article in the NYT talks about heart rate and exercise. The article makes it seem like you shouldn’t bother monitoring it. I just don’t agree. Seeing heart rate as the goal is a mistake. Obsessing over the number - any numbers unless you are a high-performance athlete - is ridiculous and counter-productive. Watching your heart rate should be, like anything else, just another tool you use in your fitness arsenal. It’s just one way to measure, in real time, the efficacy of what you a

Oil up! Freak out! Dow up? Shut up!

Fri, 18 Apr 2008 12:50:34 PDT
Oil up! Freak out! Dow up? Shut up! The state-run media in Canada (and the citizen-owned media who do their best to compete with them) all lament, daily (with intra-day lament updates, all day long), the price of a barrel of oil, and the resulting price of gas. (Of course they don’t have the foggiest clue what they’re talking about, but they pretend they do.) Even as I was writing this, the state-owned CBC did a story about the latest rise in gas prices. Apparently it’s getting h

Of Economic Woes, Fears, And Hunger

Sat, 19 Apr 2008 14:49:51 PDT
In catching up on economic news this week, I've noticed a trend toward real world reports. It's as though a few in the media have awakened to the fact that a large segment of our population is struggling to just get by -- which for regular folks isn't exactly news, but it's a welcome change from the usual indifference.

EXPERTS AGREE THAT CAPITAL GAINS TAX CUTS LOSE REVENUE

Sun, 20 Apr 2008 14:03:05 PDT
During Wednesday’s Democratic presidential debate, Charles Gibson of ABC News suggested that cutting the capital gains tax might increase revenue. These statements, echoed in a Wall Street Journal editorial today, are seriously misleading, as explained below.
